Soul Searching in the Clubs: Berliners & their Relationship to Nightlife

Berlin nightlife draws adventurous minds to our city like moths to the flame, craving to understand the myth of a Berlin night. Week after week, countless Berliners go down, down the rabbit hole to sweat, to move, to dance. Buttons at ://about blank is one of Berlin’s most infamous party nights. They have not only created a place where people of all sexualities and backgrounds can come together on the dance floor but established a diverse community of like-minded people. Their monthly photo reports are a unique visual collection of those who have a strong, personal connection to Berlin nightlife. Every dance floor has a unique story to tell, whether good or bad, a story of liberation, or escapism. We wanted to get to know these stories and asked around.  Let’s go on a journey through the mind of a Berlin night.

Berlin is … a Contradiction

“What’s Berlin like?” I got asked abroad a lot and I didn’t know what to reply. “Amazing?!”… “And why?” I could never quite come up with the right answer. What I love about Berlin always felt quite unrepresentative of what I felt like the city truly is and has to offer.

You could dance half-naked on a sweaty, dark dance floor or sit in a concert hall listening to an orchestra at the same day at the same time. You could get yelled at on the streets for no reason but not obeying some random law, and minutes later strangers selflessly push the U-bahn doors open for you, putting that smile back on your face. You order a greasy, gross Döner while the finest dining could be just one door to the left. You might look at nothing but concrete blocks but if you turn around you spot a palace. You can be posh, you can be poor. You can be high or low. What is IT then when we say we love this city?

Sometimes Berlin seems to be made of shadow and light and you get the feeling that at the point where the lights and the shadows melt you’ll find Berlin’s face.

Lately I had the idea of bringing more of my daily thoughts and impressions to the blog. Just some things I notice about this incredible and disturbing city. Hope you like it.
