Have you been to Schöneberg lately? It’s more than just a rumor that good old West-Berlin is striking back against the hipster areas of Mitte & Co. While at parts of Potsdamer Straße some cooler things are already happening, the area of Bülowstraße, connecting Potsdamer Straße and Nollendorfplatz, still looks quite uninviting. Until now! Just a little while ago our team of Urban Nation settled at Bülowstraße 97 to bring color, life and art, art, art to the Kiez and all of Berlin!
Urban Nation, that is a brand new institution relating to the growing, colorful and international movement bundled up in the description of Urban Contemporary Art. Our first activity is named Project M/ and it has been realized three times already with some amazing artists. It is the baby and brainchild of our Direktor Yasha Young, who is inviting and connecting artists and curators from around the world. As a result, a group of international and Berlin-based artists comes together to change the facade and utilize the 10 large shop windows of a building just across the street of the Urban Nation headquarter. Only a few days ago the urban art fair Stroke closed its gates for this years big exhibition at Alte Münze. Of course we went there for you and took a couple of photos of the many amazing artist and gallery booths. I have to say I really enjoyed this edition. I remember after my last visit of the Stroke when it was still at Postbahnhof I left with mixed feelings about the whole set-up and not so many artworks in my head that had amazed me. But this year it was an exciting expedition with one great discovery after the other. Especially the hall of solo artists was really interesting. This Thursday the Stroke Art Fair for urban art is opening its big exhibition at Alte Münze with a full program of parties, workshops and live painting sessions. As we are big fans of urban art this is a must-go for us and we are looking forward to the works of all the graffiti, street and comic artists, illustrators, as well as graphic and motion designers from around the world that will be presented. Don’t miss the big opening party hosted by MVSCHI Kreuzberg on Wednesday night and the aftershow party on Friday night and the closing party on Saturday night. The exhibition will be open to the public until Sunday night. Get a little taste of what to expect after the jump.

Just a few weeks ago I shoke hands the first time with Anton Unai, an artist that I have followed and admired for quite some time now, at an exhibition opening at Urban Spree gallery, where he also happens to have his studio. He was so kind to show me around in his artist liar which was a great joy for me as I could see a lot of his work, published and unpublished. While we spoke about art, fame and fortune I took the liberty to make some photos for you which you can see after the jump. I admit I dread those Berlin Something Weeks because that means a hell of a lot of events to go through for this guide and not enough time to go to all the things that sound interesting. But I think I’ve managed to sum up some interesting ones for you, though I will have to publish them in two stages starting with the ones earlier in the week. This weekend the STROKE art fair for urban art is taking place here in Berlin. Numerous galleries and their artists will be presenting their work here. Amongst them many galleries we frequently feature here on the blog, such as West Berlin Gallery, ATM, Intoxicated Demons, Zozoville, Box32 or Neonchocolate. Tomorrow night, on March 12 2011 the Heimathafen Neukölln welcomes the Urban Art Circus to town. This event is also part of the Street Lab Berlin festival mentioned earlier. The Urban Art Circus is planned as a unique art project that brings together urban art forms in an experimental way. Based on hip hop battle traditions several art forms will compete against each other in tournament style.
The audience stands in the middle of this clash of creativity and experiences intriguing hot live performances. The outcome is impossible to predict. For myself I am curious to see how the dancing girls from Mrs K. B. (pictured above) will fight the renowned Puppetmastaz. The date of the show and the address after the jump.

Fans of New Contemporary and Urban Art will be delighted to hear that the STROKE Urban Art Fair is moving from Munich to Berlin for its third edition this coming October. Not only the move from Munich to Berlin – the melting pot for urban and street art – but also the move from spring to fall makes a lot of sense to us because there will be a lot of art fairs and exhibitions taking place to that time during the Kunstherbst.
The venue will be The Station at Gleisdreieck that is also home to the Premium trade show during Fashion Week. We are particularily looking forward to their special exhibition When Bloggers become Artists where 10 bloggers were invited to create a piece of art that will be printed by Whitewall and exhibited at the fair. Participating blogs are LesMads, Amy&Pink, Ignant, Artschoolvets, Styleclicker, Uberding, Eve Without Adam, Whudat, Looky Looky and Suz is submitting something for iHeartBerlin.de.
