‘Urban Art to me, means to hold a conversation in public’

Yasha Young is visibly thrilled. The director of Urban Nation, a network for street art and Urban Contemporary Art is celebrating the upcoming opening the world’s first Street Art Museum on September 16, 2017.
“Urban Art is a contemporary witness, who shows himself to everyone”, Young says with her voice shaking lightly. And with this year, this witness is about to be seen by even more people, right in the midst of Schöneberg.

Exploring Berlin: A Guide To Schöneberg

Exploring Berlin: A Guide To Schöneberg

Schöneberg, oh Schöneberg. You are underestimated. Although you have so much to offer! The late and beloved David Bowie wasn’t the only one to notice your charm, but also numerous artists such as Iggy Pop and Klaus Kinski lived in your hemisphere. There’s something about you, something mature and unagitated but still exciting. Something that feels like home yet still comes up with surprises of the unknown.

Founded as a tiny village and first documented in 1264 (that’s… a long time ago), Schöneberg was merged in 2001 with the adjacent district Tempelhof and is now called: Tempelhof-Schöneberg. We will focus on the Schöneberg-part of the district today, presenting you the best options to eat & drink, see some art, spend some leisure time in the most beautiful spots and learn something about the history of the ‘beautiful mountain’ aka Schöneberg.

FYI: Even though the district is located at a quite elevated spot, the name ‘Schöneberg’ that includes the ‘mountain-theme’ is rather a wishful-thinking-name than a geographically correct one. But who cares, right? Let’s start with our guide to Schöneberg!

Murals of Berlin: Herakut

Murals of Berlin: Herakut

These days Berlin got one more awesome amazing street art mural more! I love that this is totally becoming a thing here and it seems the murals are getting more and more refined and elaborate. We owe quite a big percentage of the new city murals to the work of Urban Nation who are actually organizing the artists and getting permissions by the city to use certain walls.

This new one up here is by the German artist duo Herakut who are already for the second time painting a wall in Berlin. It’s located at Greifswalder Str. 87 in Prenzlauer Berg right outside the ring and it’s about motherhood. Coincidently I took these making of photos on mothers day. After the jump we have more details of this new Berlin piece as well as many of their other mural. Enjoy!

Since Saturday Schöneberg’s Bülowstraße offers some real eye candy for lovers of urban art: Urban Nation invited 10 artists from around the globe to utilize the shop windows and facade of a large house that is mostly unoccupied. The result is an outdoor gallery with incredible works by artists like Alexis Diaz (aka La Pandilla), Glenn Barr, Nosego, the Lowbros, Word to Mother, C215 and many more. This is already the forth manifestation of “Project M/”, a temporary art project. And there is even more art to be found just across the street at the Urban Nation office (No. 97): The pop-up show “LAX/TXL” opened on Saturday as well with works of the 11 artists of Project M/4 PLUS a roster of more than 50 additional artists. The exhibition is opened until mid July and also Project M/4 will remain installed until at least then. More information and also the artists at work and their final works can bee adored after the jump! Read on…

Dabs Myla, Shoot The Moon

This Saturday, Berlin Schöneberg’s Bülowstraße will see a very exclusive group of international and local urban artists unpacking their stencils, cans, tapes, brushes, glue, cutter, foil, paperboard and so on, to utilize the shop windows and facade of a building that is currently mostly unoccupied. This is “Project M/“, a temporary art project that has the goal and objective to improve the neighborhood, to push creativity and to connect artists and communities. Urban Nation with director Yasha Young is the creative force behind this exciting art project.

For the installation this Saturday she joined forces with L.A.-based Thinkspace Gallery and together they came up with an amazing roster of artists from around the globe: Alexis Diaz (La Pandilla) from Puerto Rico, stencil artist C215 from France, Nosego from the US, the Aussies of Dabs Myla, the Berlin-based Low Bros and many more will be part of the project. Once the artists are finished with their work on the evening of May 17, a large, colorful Open-Air Gallery will be realized, on view for all passers-by until the next round of Project M/. And as if that’s not enough the Urban Nation office just across the street opens with a huge pop-up show named LAX/TXL on Saturday, too. More info about that one after the jump.

Berlin Art: Project M – Art for all with Urban Nation

Berlin Art: Project M – Art for all with Urban Nation

mural by Rone, photos by Henrik Haven

Have you been to Schöneberg lately? It’s more than just a rumor that good old West-Berlin is striking back against the hipster areas of Mitte & Co. While at parts of Potsdamer Straße some cooler things are already happening, the area of Bülowstraße, connecting Potsdamer Straße and Nollendorfplatz, still looks quite uninviting. Until now! Just a little while ago our team of Urban Nation settled at Bülowstraße 97 to bring color, life and art, art, art to the Kiez and all of Berlin!

Urban Nation, that is a brand new institution relating to the growing, colorful and international movement bundled up in the description of Urban Contemporary Art. Our first activity is named Project M/ and it has been realized three times already with some amazing artists. It is the baby and brainchild of our Direktor Yasha Young, who is inviting and connecting artists and curators from around the world. As a result, a group of international and Berlin-based artists comes together to change the facade and utilize the 10 large shop windows of a building just across the street of the Urban Nation headquarter. How that works and what it looks like you can see in photos and a small film just after the jump.
