With all the vintage buzz going on Mitte, Prenzlauer Berg and Neukölln you probably haven’t come across one particularily amazing second hand shop in Wedding, just a few steps from the border to Mitte. Miki Banana is probably by far the most fun one of them all as the owners have put a lot of love to details and decoration into their big shop. As the name suggests there are a lot of bananas, and where there are bananas, there are also monkeys, and where there are monkeys, there are Barbies not to far. Well, the last one might be not as logical to you, as it is to me, but that’s anoter story.
The selection of clothes, shoes and accessories is pretty much focused on 80s and 90s with all the catchy it-pieces of the contemporary vintage-loving hipster, such as bold graphic print shirts, oversized jackets and Bill Cosby’s pullovers. The variety is quite big as the store has a huge stock and prices are quite fair, especially compared to most of the shops in the other districts. If you haven’t checked this place out, you should make sure to do so, you will love it. My favorite part of the shop is it’s sense of humor that makes shopping there an extra fun experience. Some more impressions and the details after the jump.
UPDATE: Unfortunately this great shop has shut down 🙁

When I stepped into the Mayflower Vintage house in Friedrichshain earlier this year I was deeply impressed – in fact I think I’ve never been so impressed by a vintage sale ever. The selection is huge and includes all the different styles and decades of vintage fashion with a particularily big focus on the 80s. You’ll find designer handbags, colorful pattern blouses and shirts, glamorous evening gowns, fur coats, tons of accessories and shoes and so much more. Luka, the man behind this amazing collection of vintage gems, is selling his pieces in a few shops and markets, but every once in a while he opens the doors to his house for a private sale. Tomorrow one of those rare opportunites arises. So if you are a lover of vintage fashion you should head over to the Mayflower Vintage Open House in Friedrichshain. Some impressions from my last visit and the details after the jump.

Vintage Galore is a brand new vintage furniture store at Sanderstraße a few doors down from Sing Blackbird. It’s not like any of those cramped and dusty second hand furniture shops with cheap knock-offs and granny’s old stuff. It feels more like a high-end design boutique. The specialty here are 60s Scandinavian design furniture in teak wood and lamps. They also have a small but great vintage clothes section with a lot of menswear. The amazing thing about the store is the quality of the products. Many of them are refurbished by hand which makes them look as good as new. Owner Erik told me, that teak wood pieces from the 60s have always been a passion for him and with this store he turned his hobby into a profession. Well done! Some more impressions and details after the jump.

On August 24th it’s time for another SKYY VODKA SWAP MARKET. The big fashion event is now already in its fourth year and once again vintage and fashion lovers will go crazy swapping their vintage pearls and also getting their hands on some brand new designer clothes. And all this for a good cause, as all the proceeds of the event will be donated to the charity organization Berliner Aids-Hilfe e.V., so this time you don’t have to feel guilty for having another drink.
From August 9th till 23rd you will be able to submit your own high quality vintage clothes, design objects, accessories, books and records to the SKYY SWAP SPOT in exchange for a swap voucher. At the SKYY VODKA SWAP MARKET on August 24th at Café Moskau you will receive tokens for your voucher. Those you can use to “buy” other vintage clothes, brand new designer pieces, cocktails or to donate. If you don’t have enough tokens or if you didn’t submit anything, you can also buy them for real money. Remember, all proceeds will be donated, so be generous! After the swapping there will be a big party that is not to be missed! The details and impressions from the previous SKYY VODKA SWAP MARKET after the jump.

Most Fashion trade shows are normally not very concerned with sustainability. The way the Who’s Next Paris handled this topic was surprisingly creative: They invited the vintage store chain Hippy Market to host several sale booths all over the grounds of the fair. You could compare this store chain with Made In Berlin.
On these little Vintage islands that were embedded into the exhibition you could discover unusual and selected vintage pearls from Paris to moderate prices. I was actually so fascinated by this discovery that I spend half my day hunting from one booth to the other to find some vintage souvenirs from Paris. The philosophy of Hippy Market is exactly like my oppinion of the second-hand gold: Vintage is not only fashion with a history but also a good and affordable alternative to green fashion. See our favorite finds and some impressions after the jump.
