When I first started to wander around Berlin, some districts seemed to just merge together and I needed to put some effort into finding their distinguishing characteristics.  Charlottenburg, on the other hand, has definitely always been a very distinctive part with a little nostalgic streets, fancy antique boutiques, and elegantly dressed people. And no wonder that’s the impression I got – up until 1920 Charlottenburg was an independent city to the west of Berlin.

If you’re an expat like me, you’ll probably agree that while living in Berlin might equal a lot of things, becoming a part of the German community definitely isn’t one of them. Quite the contrary – it is actually quite likely to live surrounded by the members of international or maybe even your native community, shifting every day from your WG to a foreign startup you work in, and not having to speak a word of German. Ultimately, the only considerable encounters with the culture of the country you presumably chose to live in might be limited to YouTube ads and an occasional Tinder date.

Another fact you might acknowledge when you’re an expat is that one should try to broaden their horizon, venture somewhere off your usual paths and beyond the reach of the basic Spati vocabulary. Berlin Gone Wild in the 80s – New Order’s New Video

“If you can remember the 80s, you weren’t there”, says the slogan of the Berlinale success B-Movie: Lust & Sound in West Berlin. Watching the video to the new single ‘Singularity’ by New Order, you get an idea why. The night scene of the 80s in West Berlin was raw, fueled with drugs, and filled with musicians. The times were agitated and the nights were long.

The band from the UK seems to process some of these memories in their newest music video from their 2015 album Music Complete. And they used footage from the iconic B-Movie in it, edited to the song perfectly. Get a glimpse of the good old days and see the new music video right after the jump.
