We can’t quite get over how amazing Berlin looks right now all covered in snow. This has been really uplifting in the last days, especially when the sun threw itself in the mix. We really needed that. It made us realize how long it has been since Berlin was covered in snow like that. I certainly don’t remember when the last time was it feels like ages.
But if we go way way back, we’ll find that snow in Berlin used to be more common. Scrolling through historic photos we found quite a lot of beautifully captured moments of Berliners in the snow. As you know we love to also include Berlin’s history on the blog, may it be about the divided city in 1981, Berlin’s naughty nightlife in the 1920s, or this very iconic colorized post-war video. There’s something about having an eye on the past that lets you appreciate the present that much more as well as look forward to a possible future of our beloved city.
With scenes of snowmen building, sled riding, snow shoveling and just frolicking through the beautiful white wonderland we feel all giddy to get out there and capture as much fun as we can have. We all know it can melt away at any moment. Enjoy the snow!

The festival of experimental electronic music CTM 2019 (Club Transmediale) is bringing two unlikely mediums together that are both very popular during winter time: Berghain and ice skating! What?! Yesss, you heard correctly! CTM is announcing „Eishalle“, an installation that will feature an ice skating rink inside the impressively huge Halle am Berghain.
Starting on January 25th at 4 pm, you can officially go ice skating at Berghain! Of course, CTM won’t leave your ice skating performance without musical accompaniment. A variety of DJs such as in Skatebård, Rabih Beani, Mo Loschelder, Occult, and Freak de l’Afrique will create a one of a kind atmosphere. The installation and performances will be there for you to enjoy until February the 10th all topped by the unique light design of Berlin’s premier light artist Christopher Bauder.

The beloved cozy Christmas atmosphere with all its lights, markets and holiday feels are gone, even the excitement and glitter of New Year’s Eve has faded. The new year leaves us longing for more happy celebrations, but instead, gloomy January has taken their place to spread his dreaded winter blues. I can’t tell you how bad it gets to me, every time. Since I was very quickly over Netflix and couch after the fourth night in the row, I thought about what other activities in Berlin could brighten up this dark January. It’s cold in Berlin. So, I’m dancing. I’m dancing more than I do in summer. Does that sound weird to you? It’s solely logical, and here’s why:
Generally, we never really stop raving here – because, well, we can. When the first leaves fall, however, and folks get out their army coats and Doc Martens, it drives me onto dance floors all the more. Am I missing the rain outside when I forgot my rain jacket, again? Am I missing freezing on the streets, tucked in my coat, while sweating in the metro, peeling off all the layers? So, when I’m not outside, what am I missing out on?

I admit that finding something positive about being in Berlin right now with the temperatures so low is really, really difficult. But we wouldn’t be “I Heart Berlin” if we wouldn’t be able to deal with this little problem, right?
One of the very few upsides of these temperatures, and in fact one that is absolutely exclusive to it, is that we get to set foot on parts of Berlin that we normally never can: The canals, rivers and lakes of the city that are now frozen shut and create new spaces to spend time on, for instance ice skating, playing ice hockey, or watching our dogs clumsily slip on the icy surface. Such fun!
The weekend pretty much exploded with your impressions of places such as Landwehrkanal, the Engelbecken or various lakes with lively activity on them. Also the Spree is a magnificent sight these days with the broken pieces of ice floating around. We collected some of our favorite impressions on Instagram and put them together here in a little gallery for you. With the cold and wet days we’ve just experienced one thing is for sure: Winter is coming. What am I saying it’s already here! The heatings are running, and we have to face it: We will all have to suffer through months of this now. Well, at least the ones among us that don’t escape to a warm island like scared chicken! The cold season in Berlin has only just begun and if you haven’t lost your mind yet, you could still lose it in the weeks to come, even though sometimes we get thrown a bone or two with a few rays of sunshine here and there.
For those of you who want to maintain their sanity in the Winter in Berlin our Blogfabrik colleague Sophia Halamoda, who also brought as the famous Berghain, Bürgeramt and Real Berliner comics, has created a fantastic comic: A Winter Survival Guide that also explains a lot of the secrets of the grey and cold seasons and how the real Berliner deal with them.

Winter could be described in countless ways. Among the most positive ones would be its definition as the time of year when all you want is to stay somewhere warm and cozy and spend quality time with your loved ones, while you are protected from the cold awaiting you outside. Should you be lucky and get the chance to see snow, well this can lead to a lot of fun. These days in Berlin, we have been experiencing both. In any case, there is a social and artistic side of winter in this city, that is perfectly encapsulated in the impressive photographs of Markus Braumann, which range from cars, train platforms or streets covered in white, the entire city disguised under the vail of fog or when the snow is combined with the breathtaking sunrise that cuts through the city. Countless words have been written on the magnificence of the Berliner Summer and its superiority to cold seasons of the German capital. Yet, I cannot stop thinking why we need to compare such dissimilar cases. Fall and Winter in Berlin can be tough even for the ones, who grew up here, with regard to the weather. Thankfully, there are always viewpoints of people who do not fixate on how many degrees above or below zero the temperature is, but focus on the beauty that lies in every situation instead. Watching the following video by Chloé Schnorhk, one cannot help but be positively surprised by her black and white take on the city with the numerous faces. The music of the cello in the background reminds me of the heyday of the European cinema. While I was watching this, I could not stop wondering how come Woody Allen has not shot a film here yet.
