Out of the Cinema and onto the Lawn!

Out of the Cinema and onto the Lawn!

The Hot Tub Cinema hasn’t made it from London to Berlin yet, but the times of watching movies in a theatre with red velvet seats or cuddled up in bed are over none the less. We want to get out, sit in a deckchair or a blanket underneath the stars while the films flicker on an outside screen. Summer has finally come and it’s time for some Open Air film fun! Recommendations after the jump.

Bethanien – The Castle in the Sky of Kreuzberg

Bethanien – The Castle in the Sky of Kreuzberg

Taking a bike ride through Kreuzberg is a wonderful experience. Watching the multitudes of ethnicities creating their own vibe and vivacity in the streets, cafes and bars recharges you with an amazing energy. A place where a bike ride is always recommendable is the Kunstquartier Bethanien situated in an abandoned Hospital at Mariannenplatz. I was asked by Bettery Magazine to write about the multitudes of amazing projects going on in this building. The article series we contributed to was dedicated to the topic Recharge Berlin with Design. I choose to write about Bethanien because I can see how this wonderful exterior and interior foster creativity day by day and it shows how well historic sites can be used. Read more about it here. I also recommend the article by our dear friend Simone from Frizzi Frizzi about the Photoautomat. Thanks to Bettery Magazine for the opportunity to contribute.

Looking forward to the KreuzbergKalender

Looking forward to the KreuzbergKalender

Last year around this time I was still very relaxed and the Christmas corners in the supermarkets annoyed me like most other people. But then I sat in our kitchen with a good friend and we came up with idea of an Advent calendar that contains real experiences instead of stale chocolate. What was said was done and relaxation was quickly replaced with excel-sheets, nights of filling paper bags and plenty of anticipation for the Holiday season. Although the KreuzbergKalender was a fairly improvised project in its first year, it was a surprisingly great success. Our handmade Advent calendars sold out quickly and plenty of friends and fans visited the events we hosted and created memories we still talk about.

Now December is approaching and we decided to give the KreuzbergKalender another go in 2012. But this time around we’d like to not only do it for our friends, but with all those cool kids interested in what’s new and exciting between Schillerkiez and Moritzplatz.

Films under the Starlit Sky

Films under the Starlit Sky

The sun is burning down, there’s no clouds in sight and if you’re lucky you spend the day near the lake, in the park or at the pool. It usually seems a great idea to end a lazy summer’s day with a movie, but no-one really wants to go to a cinema venue with four walls and a roof. Open Air Cinemas are clearly the better option. Ideally a cinema underneath the stars and in the worst-case a cinema with an interruption due to rain, but hey: Nothing ventured, nothing gained!

Around the corner from my house there’s Freiluftkino Kreuzberg. In the courtyard of Kunstquartier Bethanien they set up a massive screen, a decent projector and hundreds of deckchairs. Every night one film from their really great selection is shown, beginning at dusk. It’s a great chance to catch those films of the past few months on the big screen again.

So for all you Open Air cineasts out there: a couple of recommendations for the next weeks.

The Urban Easter Egg Hunt

The Urban Easter Egg Hunt

Tomorrow we’ll be hosting our EASTER SUNDAY SPECIAL at the Merkezi, at Adalbertstr. 5/6. We’ll open the doors at 12h to start with late breakfast (waffles, quiches, scrambled eggs, coffee, cake…). In the afternoon the big urban Easter Egg Hunt starts that will give you the chance to get great gifts from fab.de and more. A preview of those you can find here.

To help you a little with the Easter Egg Hunt we have some photographic hints for you. There are 6 locations in the proximity of Kottbusser Tor where we are each hiding 3-6 eggs. One of the locations is technically 2 in one, but very close to each other. Some of the photos are only supposed to lead you the way and don’t show the actual hiding place. The eggs will be in little plastic bags to protect them from dirt and rain. They will not be burried in the ground or underneath cars and you don’t have to digg through trash. We picked quite secluded spots to hide them. The eggs won’t be there until tomorrow at 15h.

To give a maximum of people the chance to take part please only take a maximum of 2 eggs per person. When you find an egg, please bring it to Merkezi and you will receive your Easter goodie. The eggs are individualized and numbered, no chance to fool us by bringing your own eggs 😉 All remaining gifts will be raffled off in the evening at the party. Good luck on the egg hunt! Find the hints after the jump on 2 pages!

Das Hotel

Hotel

Das Hotel is a small charming bar and club in Kreuzberg close to Paul-Linke-Ufer. I particularily like this place for its rustic charme, the nice non-pretentious mixed crowd that comes here and the big bouquets of lilies normally spread out all over the place. Wednesday to Saturday they open their basement club that offers a mixed program of live music and parties. Dispite its name Das Hotel is not a hotel, however they do rent out charming private flats and rooms. More infos and pictures after the jump.

A Chamber of Wonders

photos: Jens Wernscheid

“Wunderkammer” (chamber of wonders) is the name of a new shop in Kreuzberg, and this name could not have been chosen more adequately. As soon as you enter it, you somehow enter another world: a world that is full of magic and wonder. Find out more about this treasure chest after the jump.

Youthful Partyguide

The Fountain of Youth

Young forever! New studies have proven, if you only dance enough, you’ll certainly age more slowly. A lack of sleep is also very useful. Or a sip out of the fountain of youth. Where you’ll find that one, I tell you after the jump:

We Are Golden

Leo Diamond

A real nightowl gives a sh.. about sun or no sun, but are we not feeling much more motivated to go out at night since it has become milder outside? We are, but constantly yet destroy Saturday and Sunday, either spending it comateuse in bed or still at Hain’s or Gate’s dark chambers. But we are golden..that’s all that matters. Parties after the jump:
