The Hunger Symposium: Exploring the Neverending Stream of Social Media Content

I’m excited to share with you a very special collaboration I have been working on for the past months: Together with my dear colleague Tamara Saphir and the theater company Constanza Macras / Dorkypark I co-curated The Hunger – Symposium at Volksbühne Berlin that will happen from December 6th until 8th. And you’re all invited!

The symposium is dedicated to the world of content creators as it explores the dynamics and depth of social media and its overlap with the world of theater. Having worked in social media for 17 years now thanks to iHeartBerlin this is a project that couldn’t be closer to my heart and closer to the world I have operated in for so long. We invited some amazing content creators from all over the world to bring their content and their talent to the stages of Volksbühne. They will host workshops, do performances, give lectures and join panel talks. The spectrum of genres and topics is so wide – the program really is as diverse as it gets and I can’t wait to share more about it with you.

The initiator of the symposium is Constanza Macras with her theater company Dorkypark. Their current piece The Hunger which premiered in September with great success has a strong focus on social media – but not in the way you would expect. Its overarching story is related to a very special story of colonialism and it deals with the topic of excess and greed which is something that brings us quickly to modern-day social media dynamics. The piece is filled with references to actual content creators, viral videos, and online trends – they are like the connective tissue of the entire production.

The Hunger – Symposium is like a companion to the theater piece that creates a bridge to the real world of content creators and is like a learning and experimentation ground both for social media creators and theater makers alike to explore what they share and what they can gain from each other. And we want to involve audiences from both sides and take them on this journey with us.

We put together an exciting program that brings talented content creators from different platforms and different eras together: From La Tigresa del Oriente from Peru who is a meme queen who rose to fame in the early days of YouTube, over Joab Nist from Notes of Berlin who is a legacy blogger with over a decade of content under his belt and Mutlu Karaduman from Turkey who reinventes couture fashion with everyday objects on Instagram, to the M.I.K Family from Berlin that took the Tiktok Dance world by storm in the last years – there are a lot of incredible people on stage.

I will even host my own event in the form of an interactive lecture about two of the biggest online trends of this year: Brat Summer and Demure Autumn. I’ll dissect the complexity of online trends, explore where they come from, and what influence they have on public discourse and culture.

Below you will find the program with all the workshops, lectures, panel talks, performances, and shows. Most of the events are for free, but registration is required. Some events have a small fee of 10 or 20 EURs. Tickets can be bought on the website of Volksbühne.
