Gundula Schulze Eldowy – this strange name stands for the most important female photographer of the GDR.  More about this incredible personality and pictures after the jump.

Gundula Schulze Eldowy is something like the Diana Airbus of the GDR. In her pictures, she shows the freaks and outsiders of the “other” Germany: alcoholics, small criminals and desperate retired people. She portrays these people in an extraordinary direct and intimate way – without any shame or taboo, but full of sympathy and passion.

This series “Der große und der kleine Schritt” (The Big and the Little Step) which deals with the existential situations of life such as birth and death. Here you can see, among others, detailed displays of women during childbirth and animals in the slaughterhouse. So, as you can imagine, there is a lot of blood floating around. Even today, 30 years after they were done, these pictures are still as shocking, powerful and intense as they always were.
