The Tanz im August Festival is kicking off tonight and we couldn’t be more excited! This festival brings some of the most exciting dance productions from Germany, Europe and beyond to the most significant stages of Berlin. From the 3 stages of the Hebbel am Ufer theaters, the Haus der Berliner Festspiele, Radialsystem, and Sophiensäle, to special locations such as Tempelhofer Feld, Berlinische Galerie, Stadtbad Oderberger and St. Elisabeth Church you will be able to enjoy the excellence of dance all over the city.

DANCÆ – A True Fusion of Techno and Ballet

It has been attempted many times to bring together techno and club culture and the world of dance and ballet. And while the results are often fun and entertaining, impressive even – they are rarely authentic. But if the results are great – what does it matter? Well, the answer to that is connected to a lot of challenges the techno scene and club culture are facing. While still being marginalized and disadvantaged they are heavily commodified and commercialized in recent years which has caused a lot of grief and disagreement in the scene.

So, naturally, when I see a project like DANCÆ and its associated dance company Ballet sur_real that is rooted in the actual scene it makes me excited because it brings out the best in creative work on the intersection of different disciplines and genres.

Tanz im August is back – Reconnecting Nature, the City, and our Bodies

How can we still dance in a world where forests burn, oceans boil and societies become hateful instead of peaceful? The recent incident in the US where a young man was fatally stabbed by a teenager at a gas station because he was voguing was a big shock to the queer community worldwide. But it’s not a coincidence that bodies that nonconform to patriarchal power structures get attacked and killed. And especially, bodies that dare to show their power with dance are a threat to the old ideas of how the world should be run.

When thinking of dancing bodies in today’s world I think of pleasure, but I also think about the power of changing things that were taken for granted for way too long. So maybe we can help the world by dancing?
