As Summer returns, so does one of our favorite happenings: “Staatsoper für Alle” – the annual open-air that transforms Bebelplatz Unter den Linden into an open-air arena for classical music. With free admission, live performances, and a special pop-up picnic organized by us, our readers are in for an unforgettable experience.
I guess most of our iHeartBerlin readers have been to an open-air party, a festival, or any other kind of music experience you can have beneath the summer sky. But over the years, I noticed how many see classical music as something that can only be experienced behind closed doors in big concert halls and so on. But what if one of the biggest and central public spaces in Berlin would become an open-air concert venue?
This is exactly what happens at the annual classic music festival “Staatsoper für Alle” by Staatsoper Berlin. Surrounded by all the beautiful buildings, Bebelplatz will become the perfect place to enjoy the sounds of classical music happening on this special weekend. Everybody can come with a blanket and a cushion, sit on the floor of Bebelplatz, and create their own experience with family and friends – free of charge.
In 2018, we started the tradition to make our own little picnic for our readers, and this year we want to spice it up a bit. We will bring everything you need to have a tasty picnic aperitivo with friends, and we are giving away 3×2 spots for our readers to join the picnic party for the live concert on the evening of the 9th of July. To win, please comment under this post on Instagram.
What is the program for this year?
On Saturday the 8th of July at 19:00h there will be a cinema-like open-air screening of the opera Don Carlo by Guiseppe Verdi with Daniele Rustioni as musical director.
On Sunday the 9th of July at 19:30h there will be a live concert by Staatskapelle Berlin directed by Zubin Mehta with pieces from Richard Wagner and Anton Bruckner. At this event the iHeartBerlin picnic will happen starting at 18:30h.
For the Sunday concert, the wind of change brings a new star on the pedestal, as the renowned conductor Zubin Mehta takes the baton, leading the ensemble with his extraordinary talent. Mehta’s involvement adds an extra touch of international glamour to the already exciting event, ensuring a performance that will resonate deeply with classical music enthusiasts. Hailing from India, Mehta’s talent and global recognition have made him a well-known figure in the world of classical music. It is a really special privilege to have the chance to listen to one of his concerts.
Traditionally, the Staatskapelle, under the esteemed leadership of Daniel Barenboim, graced the festival with its captivating melodies. However, this year marks a transition as Barenboim regrettably departed from his role due to health issues.
Staatsoper für Alle is organized by Staatsoper Berlin in collaboration with their long-standing partner BMW, who supports the Opera in making this event free of charge for everybody and classical music more accessible.
Furthermore, this event is part of the program of Kultursommerfestival 2023.
