Hear us ROA

I have more passion for illustrated and sophisticated street art then for graffiti or more simple symbolic pieces from the likes of Banksy & co. One artist I have observed for a while now is ROA. He magically turns animals inside out. In a brutal yet aesthetic kind of way. To see some of his work you can visit the Skalitzers Contemporary Art Gallery. Their current exhibition is an annual showcase, that includes the work of ROA, as well as some other gallery artists. More pictures of the exhibition and all the information you need after the jump.

Mädchen Ohne Abitur – German Cuisine #4

Mädchen Ohne Abitur

The unusual name of this restaurant based in the South of Kreuzberg roughly translates to “girl without highschool degree”. What does that have to do with anything, you might wonder! Nothing really, but it surely is a name you won’t forget so easily. Stepping into this place reminded me a bit of the appartment of our friend Julia who is a big fan of the color red, black and white Audrey Hepburn photos and kitchy little vintage goodies.

The food on the other hand is not kitchy at all. Here you will find traditional German dishes such as Königsberger Klopse and fried liver with apple and onions, mixed with a few international dishes. What I was most delighted with was the Laugengebäck that we got as a starter. The best starter bread I ever had. For some impressions of the restaurant and the food look after the jump.

Volt – German Cuisine #3

Volt

In terms of originality, taste and look the food at Volt has definately been the most impressive in my series of restaurants with German cuisine. Traditional German dishes are served as gourmet variations that will take you by surprise and not only please your tongue but also your eyes. The restaurant itself is quite incredible as well: It’s built into an old transformer station at the Paul-Linke-Ufer in Kreuzberg. The mix of the industrial space with very modern interior gives it a totally unique charme. The details and some impressions of the dishes and the place after the jump.

Revolutionary Partyguide

Ena from Ena Wild Sunday at Backyard

The year has passed quickly and another first of May is waiting for us. The police recently invented the strategy of deescalation and it seems to be working: there have never been so many parties on the first of May like this year. But don’t you forget what this day is all about, while we are partying, our brothers and sisters are risking health in order to fight for a better life for all of us. So why don’t you join one of the peaceful May demonstrations? Because dancing is the most peaceful way of protest? If you say so. Parties after the jump:

Street Lab meets Berlin – Exhibition

There was a time we were hunting for street art much more often . Recently we got a little lazy about that.  Luckily there are certain occasion were streetart is presented in galleries. One of this rare occasion is the Street Lab meets Berlin Festival this weekend. It presents a selection of national and international urban artists who expose the urban world instead of simply just illustrating it. The workshop “Keystone Editions” will host an exhibition of works by all of the artists participating in the festival. The big opening of the exhibition is tonight. There will also be the possibility to see a famous street artist in action.  Street artist El Bocho will be at Keystone Editions for a mini-residency during the festival. The opening time and the address, after the jump.

Vintage for Lovers

Fashion Week has a problem with time. For a few minutes people are wearing clothes on the catwalk  that will actually exist in one year’s time. Artistic design vision whos consumable reality will happen only in the future. This year there will be another fashionable time-absurdity. In the closed shop of a deceased grandmother on a Spanish island, a Berlin couple found a real treasure. Giant amount of coats, suits, blouses and skirts from the 60s and 70s, everything in mint condition and with tags. That this treasure not only has historical value, but also a financial one will be proved by the Vintage Love Pop-Up Store which opens during this Fashion Week. After the jump you can find out where it is located and when it is open.

Everybody goes to Kottywood

Gentrification is a strange Dilemma. You want to have cool and interesting art and events going on around your neighbourhood, but at the same time you know that these are the things making your neighbourhood more expensive and a lucrative investement. Even if the whole Kreuzberg area is gentrificated already, there seems to be a last place which held up the Kreuzberg spirit. There are so many interesting things going on right know inside and around the giant Kreuzbergcenter that I made a little summary. You will find it after the jump (in German).

Tintin

Tintin

When walking along the Paul-Linke-Ufer at the border of Kreuzberg and Neukölln you will quickly notice that this street is brimming with restaurants and cafes. The Tintin might be almost the last one on the block, but for me it is the most appealing one with its minimalistic industrial interior (which by the way was done by the same people who designed the Panoramabar) and modern kitchen.

They menu looks surprisingly short, but considering I would have ordered almost everything except for the seafood dish I would call it effective rather than short. On my first visit I tried two dishes of the day menu which were the veal ragout with risotto and the walnut-potatoe-carotte rolls, as well as the club sandwich from the regular menu. All three dishes were absolutely delicious and I can’t wait to go there again to try out their new creations of their day menu. Some impressions of the food and more details about the restaurant after the jump.
