Reference Berlin: A Creative Festival Challenging the Standards of the Fashion World

Reference Berlin: A Creative Festival Challenging the Standards of the Fashion World

With Reference Berlin the fashion scene got a new highlight that we have long been waiting for. While the regular Fashion Week is performing a dying swan dance for the last couple of seasons, it is independent events like this that give us life.

Reference Berlin has certainly decided to go a different path. That becomes obvious when you notice how little “actual fashion” was presented at what was dubbed a 24h festival for creativity. It was a bold statement in itself and also a refreshing effort to create something different that feels more in line with our current mindset during a time of so many changes in the industry.

The Berlin-based all-black-everything design collective number one takes on the city in their new photo series.

Hybrid Art in Berlin – When Fashion meets Contemporary Dance

Hybrid Art in Berlin – When Fashion meets Contemporary Dance

Dance is an expression of the body, while fashion design gives the body new form and function. Can both become one in an only and unique genre? Last Saturday the new Hybrid-Art Space TRAUMABARUNDKINO presented its first in-house production combining contemporary dance choreographies with the presentation of four young fashion talents.

We had the opportunity to experience the performance NOW YOU MAY TELL THAT I’VE BEEN SEEN BY YOU and were incredibly stooked by so much creativity from different angles coming together.

RIPMARK: An Intervention Against Fast Fashion by Rocco & His Brothers

RIPMARK: An Intervention Against Fast Fashion by Rocco & His Brothers

Rows of shopping paper bags put up upside down in the middle of a busy street in a way that they resemble gravestones. Unfortunately, that’s not any silly Halloween action. On the contrary – the ”RIPMARK” bags, each with a cross printed on them in a familiar blue font, symbolize actual deaths of innocent people. The happening, organized by intervention artists Rocco and his Brothers in a collaboration with the street artist Hera from Herakut, is a bold gesture of protest against fast fashion.

These Berlin Girls are Redefining Waste-Free Design

These Berlin Girls are Redefining Waste-Free Design

The fashion industry is believed to be one of the most toxic businesses for our environment. Billions of clothes are produced every year and in the process, lots of chemicals and dirt gets thrown into our rivers and oceans. But the saddest part is: most of it will maybe only last one or two seasons before it gets thrown into the garbage bin, and a large portion of the produced clothes that was never sold will get destroyed without having ever been worn. This is the shocking truth that everybody knows but everybody also wants to ignore when it comes to their personal needs.

This is not the case for Hanna and Julia. The two Berlin-based designers and Yoga lovers saw an important opportunity in clothes waste to make a difference with an amazing idea: Why not use the strong fabric of old jeans to create new bags for your yoga mat?

With this concept, they created the brand Dzaino which is nowadays making more products beyond their signature yoga bags. For their crowdfunding campaign, they asked me and other Berlin-based people why sustainable local design is so important and why it’s worth supporting. I think the most important part of this projects is to show that in cities like Berlin alternative concepts of multinational brands are tested and can become a reality. A reality that we really need to save our planet. Check out their video and pics of the campaign below and support them here.

The Era of Avant-Garde Porn

The Era of Avant-Garde Porn

The girls and guys from Pornceptual never cease to stimulate us with their creative erotic output – no matter if it’s with the photos on their blog, their magazines or the videos for their parties. They’ve given us flowers in spring, Mad Max futurism, surrealism, and horror porn. Now they’ve opened their Avant-Garde era with a new photo series by Yu-Liang Liu and a video by Pornceptual co-founder Chris Phillips.

With fashion having borrowed heavily from the aesthetics of pornography and fetish wear, it was a matter of time until the exchange of genres also happened in the opposite direction with porn integrating elements of design and fashion into its aesthetic. The new works from Pornceptual are just a few examples of that. It was about time that porn also exists with a sense of style – it’s all the more stimulating!

Don’t miss the upcoming edition of the Pornceptual party on April 13th, 2019. The new theme is called “Porn Forrest” and you can expect quite a lot of sex behind the bushes…

The Amazing Slow Fashion Labels from Berlin

The Amazing Slow Fashion Labels from Berlin

Berlin is not only known for cultivating a tolerant, progressive, queer, feminist and anti-racist culture, it has also become a hub of conscious and sustainable living. It promotes a low-waste, vegan and fair art of living, that we would love to elaborate on today. In the past couple of years, the eco-fashion industry grew some deep roots here and further evolved into cool looking products, that express a choice of living consciously (but remain fashionable).

There are quite a few progressive fashion labels in and around Berlin now that are having an impressive presence at the green events during Fashion Week, in big shops like Loveco and in the growing variety of amazing concept stores around Berlin, that present fairtrade, untreated and vegan clothes, bag, shoes, furniture, and cosmetics. If you wanted to, you could go completely green with everything you need, provided by designers and enthusiasts from Berlin. In the following, we have listed our favorites!

The BVG Teams up with Adidas for Iconic Subway Sneaker

The BVG Teams up with Adidas for Iconic Subway Sneaker

Like many Berlin fans I really love the pattern of the old subway seats from the BVG. It’s one of those things so iconic about Berlin, even though its such a simple design. I was quite excited when I saw the BVG has teamed up with Adidas to release its first own limited edition sneaker in celebration of its 90th birthday. How cool is that? And the shoe looks really amazing, too! I can’t wait to see it live.

The sneaker will come out on January 16 at the Adidas flagship store in Mitte and at Overkill in Kreuzberg in a limited edition of only 500. You can expect there to be quite the long line because the shoe also functions as year-long BVG ticket (valid in all BVG buses, trams, ferries and subways – not in the S-Bahn though!). With only 180 EUR this is quite the bargain!
