Dorky Park’s Brickland

I saw the play Brickland by Constanza Macras a few months ago at Schaubuehne. It was not my first encounter with the crazy dance theatre group Dorkypark, but it was my most impressive. Theatre is something that doesn’t come so easy on me, especially when it involves hysterical screaming. But this was different. Brickland was a welcome relief from a row of several pieces that either annoyed or bored me. The actores and dancers had an amazing energy on a great stage and it was just fun to watch. The play itself evolves around the problems of gated communities and their inhabitants. Find out more about it after the jump or this Saturday and Sunday at Schaubuehne.

Christmas Market Season starts

 Kulturweihnachtsmarkt

Tomorrow the Christmas market season starts and all over town places and streets are transformed into Christmas Wonderlands. A city as big as Berlin of course offers quite a lot of opportunities, something for every taste. If you like it big and cheasy, go to Alexanderplatz, if you like it ecofriendly, go to the Kollwitzkiez, if you like it magical, go to the Gendarmenmarkt. But our special tip is the Kulturweihnachtsmarkt at Marheineckeplatz in Kreuzberg. Some of you might have already seen the cute posters. With clowns, live theatre and shows this might be especially interesting for families with kids. Have a jolly Christmas time!

Dancefloor Aerobics

Mara Trax at Crush

Mara Trax

Ready for some more dancefloor aerobics? Okay, so then get your legs stretched, here are our recommendations for the weekend:

On Friday thou shall go to the lovely people from De:Bug magazine celebrating at Picknick with a live set by Nerk and Dirk Leyers and DJs MIA and many more. Or if you dare to bear you can go visit the Pet Shop Bears at the Cuntine (Berghain Kantine) who have Erobique as their special guest star for the night. But you might wanna check if you are male and have enough chest hair for that one, though.

On Saturday you can join the fun crowd at the Yum Yum Party at Scala, or swing your hips to housy funky electronic tunes by Mara Trax, Alexkid and Matt Sims at Crush. And if you feel like putting on a hat again, then you should dress up Twenties style and head over to another Boheme Sauvage night at Oxymoron. Flyers after the jumpsicle.

One Year Bar Tausend

Snax at Bar Tausend

special guest act Snax

Last Sunday the absolutely chic bar Tausend celebrated its first birthday. Once again this was a costume party, which is something we’ve been quite a lot to lately. But while the club kids of Scala did not like to dress up that much, the guests of the bar Tausend put on a whole parade of great costumes and outfits. This was fun! More photos after the flash.

And don’t forget, tonight at bar Tausend: Ricardo Villalobos!

The Beat Goes On

Today, 17 years ago, Freddie Mercury died at the age of 45 only hours after he publicly confessed to have AIDS. Why do I know this? Well, I read it in The Beat Goes On – a calendar of dead musicians. Every day it lists all popular musicians and band members who died on that day and why. It’s quite interesting and keeps the memory of so many creative people alive that might otherwise be forgotten. Details after the jump.

Design Against Aids

Design Against Aids

Do you remember last year’s cooperation between BlaH&M and Designers Against Aids that produced a collection of T-Shirts with prints designed by a bunch of celebrities? Well, if you think you can do better than them you will get the chance to do so with Dawanda, MySpace and, of course, Designers Against Aids. Your task is to create a reinvention of the Red Ribbon. It can be anything, a shirt, a postcard, an accessory, or whatever else that comes to mind. 10% of the proceeds of your product at the Dawanda shop will go directly to DAA to help them educate the world about HIV and AIDS. On December 1st the best designs will be rewarded. More about the competition here.

I personally never really liked the Red Ribbon. It’s supposed to be a symbol of awareness but it says so little and makes the display of compassion all too easy. Also, the Red Ribbon shall not be used commercially. So we will not use it in our design. We’re doing it Katharine Hamnett style.

Here in Berlin the number of HIV infections per year have doubled since 2000. 90% of last year’s registered infections go to the account of gay men. No wonder that a lot of straight people think that they cannot get AIDS (only if you’re amongst those unlucky 10%). And, sad but true, there are some gay men who give each other gifts on the days of their infection. Happy infection day!

EDIT: Obviously some people think that I mean these slogans literally. Well, I don’t. You miss my point. It seems there is a need for an explaination. Read on for that. Read on…

Alice In Wonderland

Alice In Wonderland Bags

I noticed these cute bags with vintage paintings of Alice In Wonderland on my last visit to Redspective. Maybe a little kitschy for some people, but on the right girl these will just look adorable. It’s funny, the girl in the painting looks a lot like the actress that’s going to play Alice in Tim Burton‘s take on Alice In Wonderland starring Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter. Redspective offers you guys a nice deal: If you visit their store at Rosa-Luxemburg-Strasse and say you’re a reader of iHeartBerlin.de you’ll get a 10 EUR discount on all Alice bags. There are some more bags after the jump.

Santogold at Electronic Beats Festival in Berlin

Santogold

Yesterday was the night of the long-awaited Electronic Beats Festival with Peaches, Santogold and Hercules And Love Affair. The long wait in the cold in front of the sold out venue was totally worth it. It was a blast! All of the acts gave amazing performances that were even better than I anticipated. See some photos of the night after the jump.

Celebrate! Penetrate!

Ricardo Villalobos

Ricardo Villalobos

On Friday you can celebrate with Cosmo Vitelli and a special guest at the .BHC at the opening of their latest exhibition, once again hosted by the lovely Macaroni Club. And on Saturday you can penetrate at Scala at the Deep Penetration Dance Dance Dance Party. Yeah I know, it’s like there aren’t any other clubs in Berlin…

If you ever wanted to see Ricardo Villalobos live you should go to Watergate on Saturday. Even if his strict minimal music is not everybody’s thing, he is the best DJ in the whole wide world! And if you don’t care so much for the Watergate you can still catch him at the Bar Tausend next Tuesday at the Verve Club. Flyers after jump.
